Lake Street Dive - “Better Not Tell You” [Live from The Bridge Studio]

Music • Views: 12,939

Don’t paint me a picture
I’ve read the writing on the wall
I got me a system
I don’t even need a crystal ball
This sweet premonition
Is pretty convincing, after all

Cause I’m sure I know what the future holds
And what cards are gonna fall

Oh but I better not tell you, better not tell you now
I got a secret, baby
Better not tell you, better not tell you now
And I’m gonna keep it
I don’t know if you’ve heard
But, baby, actions speak louder than words
So I better not tell you, better not tell you

It’s fairly hard to be patient
Waiting for the future to unfold
It’s a keen observation
Saying that fortune favors the bold
I got a prognostication
If you could just give me your hand to hold

I would have no doubt,
I could go all out
But when you’re leaning so close…

Oh but I better not tell you, better not tell you now
I caught a feeling
Better not tell you, better not tell you now
Up to the ceiling
We could leave it in the hands of fate
Or baby we could take a leap of faith
Either way, I better not tell you
Better not tell you

All in good time
I’ll tell you everything

Oh but I
Better not tell you, etc.

Watching the Derby prep and not a single expert on the panel said a word about the trainer wrapping a length of webbing around the base of the horse’s tonge and tying it off on the bridle so the horse doesn’t swallow it and choke itself to death in front of the cameras.

Now I’m getting hungry for a slice of Kern’s Derby Pie. Especially when it comes out of the oven and topped with real whipped cream!

My dad and I were talking earlier today about inflation, and people complaining about how it’s high rather than recognizing that it’s about where it would be if it had been running at a historical average rather than us screwing over poors who are finally getting their chance right now. He told me that the house we bought in 1984, which was worth about $40K back then, was purchased on an interest rate of 14%. He was actually paying more monthly toward the cost of his house (not the property tax part), than I am paying now on my $150K loan at 4.25%.

I just got done canvassing in the rain. I was feeling as sanctified as I did after confirmation, but that’s just how they do it here.

I used to canvass as a job, 40 years ago. Now you need a smart phone, but man, you can work with as much detail as you want. Elections here have 100% mail in ballots, and the data in the door-knocking app is updated when a person has already voted, so you can skip that door.

I worked with my Lubbock buddy and her smart phone. Her battery wore down, and she forgot her charger. She plugged it into the car, we drove to an apartment complex, wrote down (on paper!) a list of the addresses we were to visit, and did another hour.

The candidate is running for state legislature. The primary is in 3 weeks, and there are no Republicans running, so this is the decider. The other Democrat claimed endorsements that he didn’t get, and claimed credit for actions taken by a board that he and the woman I canvassed for were both on. I signed up for the chore when the candidate was endorsed by Moms Demand Action, but I became an enthusiast.

The biggest pot dispensary in the area just moved to a new location (the old location was directly across the street from the police station…;-) ).

New location is next door to a Taco Bell.

Hmmmmm……

The weed store closest to me is one block west of the County Courthouse/Sheriff’s Office/Jail and one block east of a Taco Bell.

Kentucky Apple Stack Cake

Ingredients:

For the Cake:
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour*
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, very soft
1 1/4 cups Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 large eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk

For the Applesauce Filling:
8 regular sized apples such as Granny Smith
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions:

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt and sift together. Set aside.

Mix butter until light and fluffy. Add sugar and molasses and mix until well combined and airy. Scrape bowl.

Add one egg at a time waiting for previous to be fully incorporated. Scrape bowl well.

Add flour and buttermilk alternately in about 5 increments, starting with and ending with flour.

Divide dough in 8 even balls. Press balls flat on a parchment or plastic food film lined cookie sheet. Place in refrigerator or freezer for about 15-30 minutes. Meanwhile turn on oven at 350°F.

Roll each piece of dough into an 8 or 9 inch diameter round circle. Trim perfectly round using a pizza wheel and a cake pan or dinner plate as your guide.

Place on parchment lined cookie sheets and place in oven. Bake until center of cakes no longer look wet but is still soft, about 11 minutes. Let cool.

Prepare applesauce by combining water and sugar into a pot large enough to hold all apples. Peel apples one at a time, cut in 4 and then cut crosswise into 5-6 pieces. Place in pot and repeat with all apples.

Bring to a boil and then turn to simmer. While stirring cook for approximately 15-20 minutes or until apples are tender.

Mash apples with a potato masher until no large pieces remain. Let cool.

Place a baked layer on a serving plate and cover with one seventh of applesauce. Spread evenly.

Repeat with all layers and applesauce until all is used.

Wrap cake in plastic food film and place in refrigerator overnight.

If desired sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
Stripe effect in picture was obtained by placing smoothie straws on surface of cake and then sprinkle with powdered sugar.

I am confused. I was just taking a peek at FR, and noticed that their grift-a-thon is running way behind. I clicked on their Rah-Rah Let’s All Pitch In thread and saw this posted without comment.

Is it supposed to have a meaning understood by Freepers? Is it an actual collage of some sort? Was it an AI generated picture? The lettering on the sticker (or whatever) in the upper right actually spells words, but the gun with the reversed handgrip (or whatever it’s called) and trigger doesn’t make sense. And why all the bullets and tiny knives and dog only knows what else forming the background?

It’s a good presentation of a firearm, since most gun deaths in this country are suicides.

Lots of signs along the roads around here offering ‘tall grass mowing’ services. The little weedeater I have is insufficient even for this stuff. Probably better to pay someone a couple hundred bucks to come down with a crew and clear the path and srrounding growth which is already a good six feet in height.

While not impossibly from a generative AI, when dealing with FR and similar sites we must always remember that gun cults are a thing here in America.

The obsession is real, and I will argue that said people are just as taken up in their fantasies as the next religious person.

Sure, but what’s with the gun that will shoot the person pulling the trigger? The rest of it would make sense, as much as you could expect on FR, anyway.

Not a fan of horse racing.

Had a client (back in the day) who ran a racket of fixing claiming-horse races by drugging horses to run slow, conducted multi-state betting on his (non drugged) winning horses; then selling the winning horses to “investors.”

Don’t consider today’s racing to be that much of a step up. e.g. Breeding spindly legs of today’s thoroughbreds.

re: #62 Charles Johnson

Here’s an appropriate thing from the “classics” section of the internet,

If Dr. Seuss wrote Tech manuals

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
And the double-clicking icons put your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted ‘cause the index doesn’t hash,
Then your situation’s hopeless, and your system’s gonna crash!

If the label on your cable on the table at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel by another protocol
That’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
‘Cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy’s getting sloppy on the disk,
And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC,
Then you have to flash your memory and you’ll want to RAM your ROM:
Quickly turn off your computer and be sure to tell your mom!

The firm — LaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Rosen, Kittridge, Carlin and McPartland — has represented Mr. Trump’s political operation in numerous suits dating to his first presidential run, helping secure several settlements and dismissals and billing nearly $3 million in the process…

A law firm that has long defended Donald J. Trump’s campaign and businesses from employment lawsuits has abruptly asked to withdraw from a yearslong case over what it calls an “irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship.”

Charismatic, the Derby and Preakness winner in 1999, came up lame after the Belmont Stakes while going for the Triple Crown. The jockey Chris Antley immediately jumped off him, held his leg up saving that horse’s life, and Charismatic lived another 17 years. Unfortunately, Antley died of a drug overdose the following year.

John Hiatt - Old People [Audio Stream]

LYRICS:
Old people are pushy
They don’t have much time
They’ll shove you at the coffee shop
Cut ahead in the buffet line

They’ll buy two for a dollar and fifty
Then they’ll argue with the checkout girl
They’ve lived so much behind them
They’re trying to slow down this Goddamn world

Chorus:
Old people are pushy
They’re not mushy
Old people are pushy
‘Cause life ain’t cushy

Old people are pushy
They’ll drive how they wanna drive
And go as slow as they want to
They don’t care who stays alive

And they’ll kiss that little grandbaby
Up and down the back and all around the front
They don’t care what you think of them
That baby’s got somethin’ that they want

Chorus

Old people are pushy
‘Cause you don’t know how they feel
And when you pretend you do
Well, they know it’s not real

Pretty soon it’s gonna be all over
Good enough reason not to let you pass
They can seem like sweet little old people
But they’re not about to kiss your ass

I used to love the sport, going to a Derby party every year. I remember Charasmatic but it was the catastrophic injury to Barbaro (fractured 3 bones in his right hind leg) in 2007 at the Preakness, where heroic efforts were unable to prevent his death, followed in 2008 by the horrific euthanasia on the race track of Eight Belles (compound fractures in both front legs) at the Derby that turned me off of horse racing for good.

It is a beautiful sport but the two participants that make it so - the horse and the jockey - are so often abused at all levels, often to death, makes it impossible for me to support it anymore. I’ll just rewatch Secretariat et al.

Drake also gets to go down in history as the first person to use AI in a rap beef:

“Taylor Made” is a diss track by the Canadian rapper Drake in response to Kendrick Lamar, released on April 19, 2024. It follows “Push Ups”, another diss directed towards Lamar. The song features AI-generated vocals of Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg; the use of Shakur’s likeness in the song prompted a response from his estate that urged Drake to take down the song over personality rights reasons. Following the response from Shakur’s estate, Drake took down the song from all platforms.[1]

Next up for the 2 Line: Linking Redmond and Bellevue’s downtowns to Seattle’s via the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge

TL:DR The contractors fucked up once. Lets hope they do not again.

It will be great when the light rail on the Seattle side and that on the Bellevue side are connected by a rail across Lake Washington. But like has happened so often recently with companies lke Boeing and Nike, those responsible for constructing the rail have fucked up.

Kiewit and Hoffman had done a lot of construction work and quite successfully for the area. But here, for some reason, they really screwed up. Like voids in the concrete. Pillars that were too high or too low. Repair efforts that made things worse. They eventually have to cut back or destroy almost all the construction on the line across the Lake.

They finally decided to do it right, now that there was real oversight because of their past mistakes. One can only hope they do not fuck up again because the link across Lake Washington will be unlike any other in the world.

Lake Washington is very deep, making it difficult to put down the supporting structures needed for any kind of normal bridge span. And the distance is quite long for any kind of suspension bridge. And we are do not have a great history with suspension bridges.

So we have what are called floating bridges. one, the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge is the longest one the world. The one with the rail on it, the Homer M. Hadley Memorial bridge is the 5nd longest (It is adjacent to the 2nd longest floating bridge). Essentially, most of these bridges floats on top of the water, held down by cables to the bottom.

This means that the bridge surface is not completely held in place. It can move. The surface can rise and fall due to changes in lake volume or move back and forth due to winds. They have individual pontoons that float on the surface like a ship. Thus there has to be a special transition area between the solid surface from the supporting structures on the ends, and the movable bridge.

This is not a huge problem for cars as the cars can adjust to slight changes (we are talking about inches at most). But a rail structure cannot. It would derail unless something was done.

East Link Light Rail I-90 Track Bridge System Animation

So a really cool engineering problem has been hypothically solved. I just hope the contractors do a better job with that than they did with the pylons.I do not think I will take the rail under bad weather conditions for a while.

Fun History. This bridge has already sunk once, in 1990. While undergoing refurbishment, the construction crews apparently left the hatches open during one of the worst floods ever, the pontoons took on water and each sank, dragging the next one under. Fun times.

OMFG…

Just had a couple come to the front desk to tell me they needed to finish checking in. Apparently the front desk wifi access went down midday and my coworker decided to just hand out keys on the honor system instead of telling people to come back later when the system would be back up. So I figure I’ll just fix the fuck-up and check the couple in…only there’s no reservation. It’s a third party pre-paid for two days, they’ve got a confirmation email, but there’s no reservation in our system. And the guy admits that he tried to check in over 10 hours ago and is just now coming to finish it…because he needs the wifi password. So my coworker basically gave them a free night’s stay because if they bail before morning, we have no evidence whatsoever they stayed here.

No, thankfully we’re not sold out, but I reflexively put the room as OOO in the system to avoid it magically selling third-party before the audit runs.

What’s got me heated is that there’s no note anywhere about this. Nothing on the desk, nothing in the pass-on, not even a text or email about it. So I have no clue if this was a one-time deal or if there’s several rooms that were “checked-in” that we won’t know about until the guest shows up tomorrow or Monday morning to check out.

Newly revealed detail makes Trump aide’s testimony ‘even more incriminating’ than reported

He specifically asked Hope after the election what she thought about the Stormy Daniels case if the information had come out before the election because Cohen had not made the payment. And that in his opinion is was better for it to come out before the election.

This is devastating to any defense that he was worried about Melania. He only cared about the eleection and was hapy that his money had been used to keep it delayed.
